    San Francisco Giants 2 – Chicago Cubs 4

Highlights:  Drew Smyly allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings and Yan Gomes and Nico Hoerner homered in the Chicago Cubs‘ 4-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Smyly (6-8) struck out eight and walked two. The left-hander departed after Austin Dean reached on a fielding error to start the eighth. Gomes lofted a two-run shot to left center in the second to give the Cubs the lead for good. Hoerner had a two-run flare off Yunior Marte in the sixth to help end a two-game skid and send San Francisco to its fifth straight loss. Chicago White Sox 5 – Oakland Athletics 3

Highlights:  The Chicago White Sox have done some yelling. They’ve tried out plenty of good-natured teasing. They’ve had heart-to-hearts. After a rough start this season, things are suddenly clicking in September when it matters most for the reigning AL Central champions as Chicago tries to win consecutive division titles for the first time. And the White Sox are winning with manager Tony La Russa sidelined by a health issue. Elvis Andrus hit a tiebreaking double against his former team with two outs in a five-run ninth inning, and the White Sox, held hitless until the seventh, rallied past the Oakland Athletics 5-3 on Friday night.
