NCAA News – Georgetown

Providence v Kentucky Georgetown Hires Cooley as New HC – Georgetown hired Providence’s Ed Cooley  as Patrick Ewing‘s replacement to be the Hoyas’ head men’s basketball coach, the university announced after CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reported the news Monday. Cooley, 53, does so after being “on the precipice of accepting an offer,” as Norlander reported earlier in the day. A Providence, Rhode Island, native, Cooler guided the Friars for 12 seasons and accumulated a 242-153 record since 2011. Cooley led Providence to its first Big East regular-season championship in 2022 and a Sweet 16 berth. The Friars made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons. Providence went to five straight NCAA Tournaments from 2014-19 under Cooley, and the Friars would have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2019-20 if the COVID-19 pandemic did not cancel it. Kentucky knocked off Providence 61-53 Friday to eliminate the Friars from the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Cooley was asked if we would be on the bench with the Friars next season following the game.
